John Scarlett, who emigrated to Canada in 1808
John Scarlett was christened on 30 July 1777 at St. Giles' Church, Newcastle-under-Lyme. He was the son of
Samuel Scarlett and
Mary Bowker. John Scarlett was an applicant for apprenticeship as mercer, draper and upolster - to his father "Samuel Scarlett of this Borough" - an apprenticeship of 7 years (witnesses: James Ball and Robert Smith), according to the Burgess Records on 5 October 1792 at Newcastle-under-Lyme. He paid £144 to Lewis Buttler of Antigua for a male slave (a copy of the signed receipt being in Mary-Louise Ryan's possession) on 25 April 1809. He married
Mary Thomson, daughter of
Archibald Thomson and
Elizabeth McKay, on 5 July 1810 at St James' Anglican Church, Toronto. John Scarlett had his property and personal effects listed - a photocopy is held by ML Ryan (but there is no mention of any slave!) - on 1 March 1819. He married
Elizabeth Dennison after 1832. John Scarlett lived at Runnymede; and also at Simcoe Grange. He died on 31 July 1865 at Toronto, Ontario, at age 88. He was buried at St James' Cemetery, Toronto.
